Findlay Opens Conference Play with Split Against Malone

Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay softball team split a doubleheader with Malone University on Friday, March 20 at Ammons Field on the campus of Findlay High School. The Oilers dropped the opener in a tight 5-4 contest before bouncing back with a 7-3 win in the afternoon finale. With the split, Findlay opens Great Midwest Athletic Conference play at 1-1 and moves to 16-7 overall, while Malone also sits at 1-1 in the league with a 10-6 record.

Game One (L 5-4)
Malone came out strong in game one, plating four runs in the opening inning on three hits to take an early lead. They added another run in the top of the second to extend their advantage to 5-0.

Findlay broke through in the bottom of the third as senior Alexys Antal delivered an RBI double to get the Oilers on the board. Riding that momentum, junior Joslynne Frazier launched her third home run of the season, and 14th of her career, scoring two and pulling Findlay within 5-3 with four innings to play.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Oilers added another run on a sacrifice fly from sophomore Kenzie Woods, cutting the deficit to 5-4. However, a prime scoring opportunity slipped away as Findlay left three runners stranded on base.

Findlay retired three of the next four Malone batters to set up a must-score opportunity in the bottom of the seventh. However, the Oilers were unable to break through against the Pioneers' defense, falling 5-4.

Findlay totaled four runs on nine hits, while Malone scored five runs on seven hits, with both teams committing one error.

Senior Kayla Dykin was charged with the loss for Findlay, allowing four runs on three hits in the opening inning to fall to 4-3 on the season. Senior Kora Navarro provided strong relief, pitching the final six innings and surrendering just one run on four hits while striking out two.

Frazier and Antal paced the Oilers offensively, with Frazier driving in two runs on two hits in four at-bats. Antal added two hits and an RBI, while junior Anna Jones turned in a strong performance with three hits in four at-bats, including an extra-base knock.

Game Two (7-3)

Findlay bounced back quickly in game two, erupting for five runs in the opening inning. Antal got things started with a single to right before back-to-back singles from Bredel and Frazier loaded the bases. Jones then delivered a two-run double to open the scoring, followed by an RBI double from sophomore Meghan Heinsman. Freshman Sophie Retton added an RBI single to left, and the fifth run crossed on a sacrifice bunt from senior Jenna Poulson.

A two-run home run from Bredel in the bottom of the second pushed the lead to 7-0 in favor of the Orange and Black. Malone answered with two runs in the third and one in the seventh, but couldn't overcome Findlay's offensive surge as the Oilers secured the 7-3 win.

Findlay totaled seven runs on 11 hits, while Malone scored three runs on nine hits. Findlay played a clean game defensively, while Malone committed two errors.

Alexys Antal earned the win in the circle for Findlay, tossing a complete game while allowing three runs on nine hits. The Topeka, Ind. native recorded a season-high nine strikeouts and issued just one walk.

Bredel paced the offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. She also added a stolen base, bringing her career total to 59, just one shy of the program record of 60 held by Tracey Massey (1986–89). Jones contributed as well, driving in two runs on a pair of hits.

Findlay will be back in action Sunday, March 22 as they travel to Pepper Pike, Ohio to face the Arrows of Ursuline College.
