Crestview Hills, Ky. - The University of Findlay softball team split a doubleheader on Saturday, April 11, with Thomas More University, highlighted by a dominant game one win and a late-game setback in game two. The Oilers move to 27–9 overall and 10–3 in conference play, while Thomas More shifts to 16–22 overall and 3–9 in conference action.
Game 1 (W 5-1)
Findlay opened the day with an 11-hit performance and strong defensive execution in a 5-1 win over the Saints, backed by a complete-game effort from senior pitcher
Alexys Antal.
The Oilers struck first in the opening inning when junior
Anna Jones drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring senior
Annika Bredel. Thomas More responded quickly with a solo home run in the bottom half to even the score at 1-1, but Findlay's defense settled in and did not allow another run the rest of the way.
Findlay regained the lead in the second inning on an RBI single from sophomore
Kenzie Woods, scoring freshman
Sophie Retton. In the third, junior
Joslynne Frazier extended the advantage with a solo home run to left field.
The Oilers added insurance in the seventh inning, as Frazier delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in pinch-runner senior
Aurora Lescody, followed by an RBI single from Retton that scored Jones to make it 5–1.
Antal was dominant in the circle, tossing a complete game while allowing just five hits and one earned run with six strikeouts and one walk over 7.0 innings.
Game 2 (L 5-4)
Thomas More responded in game two with a dramatic comeback, scoring five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to overcome a 4-0 deficit and defeat Findlay 5-4.
Findlay took control early, beginning in the third inning when
Annika Bredel delivered an RBI single down the left-field line to score
Aurora Lescody. The Oilers extended their lead in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from senior
Kora Navarro, scoring
Kenzie Woods, and added more offense in the fifth to build a 4-0 advantage.
However, the Saints broke through in the sixth inning with a five-run rally, highlighted by an RBI double, a two-run single, and a go-ahead two-run single to take the lead for good at 5-4.
Senior Pitcher
Kayla Dykin received a no-decision after 5.1 innings of strong work, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. Freshman
Kaylynn Carter was tagged with the loss in relief.
The Oilers return to action on Sunday, April 12, traveling to Owensboro, Ky., for a doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. ET, followed by Game Two at approximately 3:00 p.m.
