Dietz Wins G-MAC Individual Title | Oilers Advance to Medal Match Play Championship Final

Florence, Ind. – The University of Findlay men's golf team wrapped up the stroke play portion of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship on Tuesday, April 21 at Belterra Golf Club. The Oilers finished the 54-hole stretch at the top of the leaderboard, posting a score of 289 (+5) in the final round for a three-round total of 859 (+7), 18 shots clear of Ashland which finished second. As a team, Findlay, G-MAC Champions in 2018 and 2024, had the lowest team score in each of the three rounds and advanced to Wednesday's medal match play final against the Eagles of Ashland University.

Along with advancing to the team final, the Oilers' day was highlighted by freshman Ross Dietz who earned tournament medalist with a final round 68 (-3). Dietz finished the 54-hole event with a score of 212 (-1), making him the only payer in the field to finish under par. Facing challenging windy conditions, Dietz charged on his final nine holes, making eagle on the par 5 11th hole to go along with birdies on 17 and 18. He would post a back nine score of 32 on his way to a 68, the only under par final round in the tournament field.

Dietz is the first freshman to win medalist honors at the G-MAC Championship since Blain Turner, Trevecca Nazarene, won the event as a freshman in 2018.

This is the second consecutive year that the tournament medalist has come from the Oilers' roster. Last year's medalist, junior Colin Schadek, finished as the runner-up this year just three shots back of Dietz. Schadek shot 73 (+2) to finish with a score of 215 (+2).

Senior Luke Metzger snagged a top-five finish, finishing T4 with a 54-hole score of 217 (+4) while sophomore Cahle Roth finished 7th at 219 (+6).

Quote from Head Coach Dominic Guarnieri

Starting the day Ross started five shots back so to go out there and shoot three-under in breezy conditions after starting bogey, bogey just shows what kind of belief he has in himself. We had three guys out there today trying to win and I would be remised if I didn't mention what kind of team this is when you have your senior leader, Luke Metzger, after not having a great day, go over and give his freshman teammate a big hug to congratulate him. That shows what this program is about, being just as happy for your teammate as you are for yourself.

Tomorrow as a team, we will focus on each shot one at a time and leave it all on the course.

Medal Match Play

The Oilers will now advance to the medal match play portion of the event. The format, which debuted four years ago, will feature the Oilers of Findlay and the Eagles of Ashland The teams will be matched up for medal match play, during which players from each of the two teams go head-to-head against each other. Each match is worth a point with the best of five claiming the tournament title.

This is Findlay's fourth time advancing to medal match play.
