Softball Splits at Tiffin as Heartbreaker Ends Day | G-MAC Tournament Ahead

Tiffin, Ohio- The University of Findlay softball team wrapped up its regular season with a split against the Tiffin Dragons on Sunday, April 26. The Oilers secured a 6-2 win in game one before dropping game two in a 3-2 walk-off loss. With the split, Findlay moves to 35-12 overall and finishes Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play at 18-6. Meanwhile, Tiffin moves to 32-12 and 20-4 in conference action, clinching the G-MAC regular season title.

Game One (W 6-2)
Findlay wasted no time getting on the board, scoring two runs in the opening inning. Senior Alexys Antal led off with a first-pitch single through the left side, and senior Annika Bredel followed with a hit to the right side. An error then loaded the bases for the Oilers, setting up junior Joslynne Frazier, who delivered a two-run single down the right field line to give Findlay an early 2-0 lead.

The Dragons pushed across a run in the bottom of the second, but Findlay responded in the top of the third to make it 3-1. The Oilers added another in the fifth, capitalizing on one of Tiffin's four errors in the game to extend the lead to 4-1.

The Oilers sealed the contest in the top of the seventh with two runs after Tiffin cut into the lead with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Junior Anna Jones delivered the decisive hit, lining a single to right-center to cap the win.

Offensively, Antal led the way, going 2-for-3 at the plate while scoring one run. Jones and Frazier each drove in two runs on one hit apiece. The standout moment of the day came from Annika Bredel, who collected her 227th career hit to set a new program record for Findlay, surpassing former UF standout Avery Shepherd, who recorded 226 hits from 2021-2024.

In the circle, Antal went the distance, tossing all seven innings to improve to 16-3 on the season. She allowed just two runs on five hits while striking out two and not issuing a walk.

Game Two (L 3-2)

Findlay struck first again, as senior Alexys Antal drew a bases-loaded walk in the top of the second to open the scoring. Tiffin responded in the bottom of the third to even the game at 1-1, but the Oilers reclaimed the lead in the top of the seventh when sophomore Meghan Heinsman delivered an RBI single, pushing Findlay ahead 2-1.

Needing just three outs to secure the win, Findlay opened the bottom of the seventh by forcing a lineout and a popup in the first two batters faced. With two outs, a single put the tying run on base, setting the stage for a tense finish. On a full 3-2 count, Tiffin's Ella Esterby delivered a walk-off home run to left field, handing the Dragons a heartbreaking victory over the Oilers.

Heinsman led the offensive charge, going 2-for-3 at the plate with an RBI, while Antal also added an RBI.

Freshman Kaylynn Carter went the distance in the circle but was tagged with the loss, moving to 7-2 on the season. She allowed three runs on eight hits while striking out two.

Findlay returns to action at the Great Midwest Softball Championship from Wednesday, April 29 through Saturday, May 2 at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio. The fourth-seeded Oilers will open play against fifth-seeded Hillsdale at noon on Wednesday.
