Oilers Explode Late to Take Down Chargers in G-MAC Opener

Akron, Ohio- The University of Findlay softball team opened play at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship on Wednesday, April 29 at Firestone Stadium. The fourth-seeded Oilers earned a 13-5 victory in the opening round of the double-elimination tournament, defeating fifth-seeded Hillsdale College.

Findlay wasted no time getting on the board in the bottom of the first. Senior Alexys Antal sparked the offense with a first-pitch double to right-center, followed by a walk from senior Annika Bredel. Sophomore Meghan Heinsman then launched a three-run home run to left to give the Oilers an early 3-0 lead. Junior Anna Jones kept the momentum going with a single up the middle, and freshman Kaylynn Carter followed with a double down the right-field line to bring Jones home, extending the lead to 4-0 after one inning.

The second inning remained scoreless before Hillsdale began to chip away at the deficit, using a two-run home run to cut the Oilers' lead to 4-3. The Chargers carried that momentum into the top of the fourth, plating two more runs to take a 5-4 lead.

After a scoreless fifth inning and a shutdown frame in the top of the sixth, Findlay broke the game open in the bottom half which included nine runs on eight hits. The Oilers evened the score at 5-5 on an RBI single from Antal before a sacrifice fly from Heinsman plated the go-ahead run. The offense kept rolling, as junior Joslynne Frazier delivered a two-run single to extend the lead to 8-5. Sophomore Kenzie Woods followed with a single that led to a Chargers error, allowing two more runs to score and pushing the advantage to 10-5. Senior Kayla Dykin added another run with an RBI single, and the rally was capped by senior Jenna Poulson, whose hit forced an error that brought in two more runs and secured the 13-5 run-rule victory for the Oilers.

Meghan Heinsman led the offensive effort, driving in four runs while going 1-for-3 at the plate. Joslynne Frazier added two RBI, also finishing 1-for-3. Kayla Dykin, Alexys Antal, and Anna Jones each recorded two hits in the game.

In the circle, senior Kayla Dykin got the start, working the first three innings and allowing three runs on three hits while striking out four. Freshman Kaylynn Carter followed in relief, giving up two runs on four hits in one inning of work. Senior Alexys Antal closed things out, earning the win to improve to 17-3 on the season after tossing two scoreless, hitless innings.

Findlay will be back in action tomorrow, April 30 as they take on the top-seeded Tiffin Dragons. That game is slated to start at 2pm.
