Offensive Shootout Goes Findlay’s Way in Doubleheader Sweep

Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay softball team powered through a pair of high-scoring battles to sweep a doubleheader against Hillsdale College on Monday, April 6. The Oilers took the first game 15-10 before claiming a 14-10 win in the afternoon matchup. With the sweep, Findlay improves to 24-8 overall and 9-2 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play, while the Chargers fall to 20-15 on the season and 8-4 in the conference.

Game One (W 15-10)
Despite an early home run by Hillsdale to start the game, Findlay responded in the bottom of the fourth. Doubles by juniors Joslynne Frazier and Anna Jones set the stage for senior Jenna Poulson's RBI groundout, putting the Oilers ahead 4-1.

The teams exchanged runs in the second inning before Findlay added another in the bottom of the third to extend the lead to 6-2 through three innings.

Hillsdale chipped away with two runs in the top of the fourth, but the Oilers exploded offensively in the bottom half, scoring six runs. Sophomore Meghan Heinsman delivered a single up the middle to drive in two, followed by Jones' single bringing home Findlay's ninth run. Poulson singled to plate another run, and a passed ball scored Jones. The inning capped off with a wild pitch, giving Findlay a commanding 12-4 lead.

Hillsdale fought back in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs to cut Findlay's lead to just 12-9. The Oilers answered in the bottom half, adding three runs behind doubles from Frazier and freshman Kaylynn Carter to restore a comfortable 15-9 advantage.

Both teams were held scoreless in the sixth, and Hillsdale managed just one run in the seventh. Findlay held on for a 15-10 victory.


Frazier spearheaded the Orange and Black offense, going 3-for-4 with four RBI, including two doubles and a sacrifice fly. Poulson drove in three runs on a single hit, while Jones and Carter each added extra-base hits and contributed two RBI apiece.


Senior Alexys Antal earned the win for Findlay, improving to 11-2 on the season. She started and pitched four innings, allowing six runs on ten hits while striking out two. Freshman Kaylynn Carter closed out the game in relief, throwing three innings and giving up four runs on seven hits.


Game Two (W 14-10)
Findlay jumped out to an early lead, scoring eight runs in the first two innings to take control at 8-0. In the bottom of the second, the Oilers poured on six runs, senior Alexys Antal drove in the first run with a single, followed by senior Annika Bredel's ninth homer of the season, a three-run shot to left field, that extended the lead. Junior Anna Jones added another RBI with a single, and a double from freshman Kaylynn Carter brought Jones home, giving the Oilers an early 8-0 advantage.

However, Hillsdale responded in the top of the third, scoring six runs of their own, capitalizing on two errors by the Oilers' defense including a defensive miscue bringing the score to 8-6 in favor of Findlay.

Findlay responded in the bottom of the third with two runs, but Hillsdale cut the lead to 10-8 in the top of the fourth. The Oilers added one in the fourth and two more in the fifth on a double from Kaylynn Carter and a single from senior Aurora Lescody.

Hillsdale scored twice in the sixth to make it 13-10, but Findlay added an insurance run in the bottom half and held the Chargers scoreless in the seventh to secure a 14-10 win.


Bredel led Findlay's offense in game two, going 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Joslynne Frazier added two RBI on three hits, while Lescody went 3-for-4, scoring twice and driving in another run.


Senior Kayla Dykin earned the win for Findlay, improving to 6-3 on the season. She pitched five innings, allowing eight runs on six hits while striking out six. Senior Kora Navarro closed out the game in relief, giving up two runs on two hits over two innings.


Findlay will be back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, April 7 as they take on Wayne State at Gary L. Bryce Field in Detroit, Mich. Those games are scheduled for 2:30pm and 4:30pm.
