Softball Sweeps Regional Foe Wayne State | Extends Win Streak to Eight

Detroit, Mich.- The University of Findlay softball team extended its winning streak on Tuesday, April 7, sweeping regional foe Wayne State University at Gary L. Bryce Field. The Oilers pushed their streak to eight straight with a 4-3 victory in game one and a 5-4 win in the nightcap. With the sweep, Findlay improves to 26-8 on the season, while Wayne State falls to 12-17.

Game One (W 4-3)
The Warriors struck first in the bottom of the opening inning, capitalizing on a Findlay outfield error. The Oilers responded in a big way in the fourth, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead. Senior Annika Bredel sparked the rally with a leadoff home run, her tenth of the season, putting her just one shy of the program record of 11, last reached by Avery Shepherd in 2022. The inning continued as freshman Kaylynn Carter launched a two-run homer down the left field line to cap the scoring.

The Oilers extended their lead to 4-1 in the top of the fifth when junior Joslynne Frazier stole second, setting the stage for senior Cassie Warner to swipe home. Wayne State answered with two runs in the bottom of the fifth, tightening the score to 4-3, but both teams remained scoreless over the final two innings as Findlay held on for the win.

Offensively, Carter drove in two runs and Bredel added one, each coming on their home runs. Frazier went 2-for-4 at the plate and crossed the dish once.

Senior Alexys Antal took the circle for Findlay, tossing just over five innings while allowing three runs on seven hits and striking out one. She earned the win, improving to 12-2 on the season. Freshman Kaylynn Carter relieved for roughly two innings, retiring all six batters she faced without allowing a hit or run, earning the first save of her career.

Game Two (W 5-4)

Findlay jumped out to an early lead in the second game when junior leadoff hitter Anna Jones launched a home run to left-center, giving the Oilers a 1-0 advantage. The Oilers added two more runs in the top of the second, as Jones singled up the middle and an error brought in another, giving Findlay a quick 3-0 lead.

The next three innings saw no scoring from either team until Wayne State evened the game in the bottom of the sixth. In the top of the seventh, with runs needed, senior Cassie Warner led off with a double down the left-field line. A Warriors' error brought Warner home, and a sacrifice fly added another run, giving the Oilers a 5-3 lead.

Needing just three outs to secure the win, Findlay retired the first two batters of the inning. A Warriors home run cut the lead to 5-4, but senior Kayla Dykin was called from the bullpen to close the game. Earning the eighth save of her career, Dykin struck out her only batter faced, sealing a 5-4 victory for the Oilers.

Jones spearheaded the offense, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs, drawing a walk, and scoring twice for the Orange and Black. Warner added a 2-for-3 performance, crossing the plate once.

Freshman Kaylynn Carter continued her strong performance from game one, tossing 6.2 innings to earn the win and improve to 5-0 on the season, allowing four runs on nine hits. Senior Kayla Dykin closed out the game with a seven-pitch strikeout, earning her eighth career save, setting a new program record and surpassing Chelsea McManaway, who had seven saves from 2015-2016.

Findlay returns to Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) action with a road trip south, facing the Thomas More Saints on Saturday, April 11, followed by a matchup against the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers on Sunday, April 12.
