Oilers Cruise to 15-1 Victory Over Ashland | Punch Ticket to G-MAC Final

Akron, Ohio- The University of Findlay softball team rolled to a dominant 15-1 victory over Ashland at Firestone Stadium on Friday, May 1, punching its ticket to the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship final. The fourth-seeded Oilers combined stellar pitching with a powerful offensive showing to improve to 38-12 on the season, matching the program's single-season wins record set in 2022. Meanwhile, third-seeded Ashland falls into the consolation bracket, dropping to 31-16 with the loss.

Both teams were held scoreless through the first three innings before the Oilers erupted in a stellar offensive inning in the top of the fourth. Junior Anna Jones sparked the rally with a two-run home run, and freshman Kaylynn Carter followed with a two-run shot of her own to make it 4-0. Senior Alexys Antal then delivered an RBI double to plate the fifth run, and senior Annika Bredel added a two-run single to right. Sophomore Meghan Heinsman capped the inning with an RBI double to center, scoring Bredel and extending the lead to 8-0.

Ashland scored its only run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run.

Findlay kept the pressure on in the top of the sixth, continuing its offensive surge. The inning began with Jones reaching on a fielder's choice, bringing in one run before an error allowed another to push the lead to 10-1. Senior Kayla Dykin, pinch hitting for the Oilers, followed with a three-run home run to make it 13-1. Senior Kora Navarro added a sacrifice fly to bring home the 14th run, and sophomore Jasalyn Sartin capped the scoring with an RBI single to right.

Needing just three outs to secure the six-inning run-rule victory, the Oilers closed it out in order, retiring the side on a pop-up and back-to-back lineouts to seal a 15-1 win, the largest margin of victory in G-MAC Tournament history for Findlay.

The Oilers had eleven different players record a hit, combining for 15 total in the game. Sophomore Kenzie Woods led the offense, going 3-for-4, while Antal and junior Joslynne Frazier each finished 2-for-3. Jones and Dykin paced the lineup with three RBIs apiece, and Bredel along with Carter each added two.

Alexys Antal threw a stellar game in the circle for the Orange and Black, going all six innings to improve to 18-3 on the year. Her 18 wins are currently the third-most in a single-season for the Findlay pitching staff as Stephanie Dyer recorded 20 in 1994 and Megan Fisher recorded 19 in 2022. Antal gave up just one run on one hit while walking one and striking out two.

The Oilers are back in action Saturday, May 2, as they compete in the G-MAC Final and look to capture the program's first-ever conference and G-MAC title. In the double-elimination bracket, Findlay needs just one win across two possible games. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m., followed by an "if necessary" game at 1:30 p.m.
