Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay volleyball team was back in action for their first two games of the Findlay Classic on Friday, August 28, sweeping California (Pa.) by a score of 3-0 (25-20, 26-24, 25-19), before falling to Davenport 1-3 (22-25, 25-21, 25-27, 20-25). With the double-header split, the Oilers now sit at 2-1 through their first three matches.
Game One vs. California (Pa.) | W 3-0
Findlay opened the match with a 25-20 victory in the first set before edging California (Pa.) 26-24 in a tightly contested second frame. The Oilers then closed out the match with a 25-19 win in the third set to secure the sweep.
Senior
Stephanie Smith led the Oilers offensively, recording 16 kills on 34 attacks while hitting .382. Smith also added one service ace, one block assist and two digs for a team-high 17.5 points.
Hannah Miller added 14 kills while hitting .206 and contributed five assists and 11 digs.
Lilly Barhorst recorded seven kills, while
Lauren Foerster chipped in eight kills on 22 attacks.
Findlay's offense was directed by
Zoya Winkelfoos, who tallied 21 assists and added two service aces and five digs.
Kirsten Bomholt contributed 17 assists and eight digs, while also recording three service errors.
Defensively,
Claire Schoenberger paced the Oilers with 17 digs, while Bomholt added eight. Miller also finished with 11 digs.
At the net, Barhorst recorded two block assists, while
Victoria Mescher added one solo block and three block assists. Findlay finished the match with 49 kills, 48 assists and 53 digs as a team.
Game Two vs Davenport | L 1-3
Findlay's night cap match-up with Davenport would be a very tightly contested affair, with no set ending in a lead larger than five points. After the two teams traded set wins in games one and two, the big blow would come when the Oilers saw their 24-21 lead disappear, dropping the third set 27-25. The Panthers would use that momentum to take set four by a count of 20-25.
Hannah Miller would be the main source on offense for the Oilers, finishing with a team-high 18 kills. Behind her would be
Lauren Foerster, tallying 11 in the match.
Winkelfoos and Bomholt would continue in their role of orchestration, finishing with 22 and 17 assists, respectively.

Findlay will be back tomorrow, August 29, for their final game in the Findlay Classic. They will take on Ashland at 1 pm.
