Volleyball Falls to Ashland in Findlay Classic Finale

Findlay, Ohio- The University of Findlay volleyball team suffered a 3-0 setback against Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) opponent Ashland University on Saturday, Aug. 29, in the final match of the Findlay Volleyball Classic. The Oilers, competing against the Eagles in a non-conference matchup, fall to 2-2 on the season, while Ashland improves to 3-0.

Ashland set the tone early in the opening set, jumping out to a 5-0 lead. The Oilers, who trailed 15-10 midway through the frame, responded with a 6-1 run to even the score at 16-16. The teams battled to another tie at 19-19 before the Eagles closed the set with a 6-2 run to take a 24-21 advantage. Findlay held off one set point, but Ashland closed out the frame to take the opening set 25-22.

The Eagles carried their momentum into the second set, building a seven-point lead at 15-8. Findlay was unable to overcome the deficit, as Ashland went on to take the second set, 25-16.

The third set featured a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to build a lead larger than two points. Findlay held a 24-22 advantage late in the set following a kill from junior Stephanie Smith, but Ashland responded with four consecutive points to complete the comeback. Three of the Eagles' four points came on Findlay errors, as Ashland claimed the set 26-24 and secured the 3-0 victory, marking the first time the Oilers have been swept since November of 2024.

Findlay finished the match with a .155 hitting percentage, recording 40 kills against 22 errors. Ashland was more efficient offensively, hitting .317 with 44 kills and 11 errors. The Eagles also held an advantage at the net, recording 11 blocks to Findlay's four.

Senior Hannah Miller, who earned a spot on the all-tournament team, paced the Oilers offensively, recording 14 kills and six digs. Senior Abria Lomax added seven kills while hitting an impressive .500 and led Findlay at the net with three blocks.

Defensively, senior Kirsten Bomholt and freshman Claire Schoenberger each finished with 10 digs, while senior Miya Ellerbrock contributed seven digs.

Findlay will return to action at the Javelina Volleyball Classic in Kingsville, Texas, which is set to take place Friday, Sept. 4 through Saturday, Sept. 5.
