Kingsville, Texas – The University of Findlay volleyball team split a pair of matches on Friday, September 4, at the Javelina Volleyball Classic, defeating St. Mary's (Texas) by a score of 3-2 (25-20, 18-25, 21-25, 25-18, 15-9) before falling to host Texas A&M-Kingsville, 3-2 (24-26, 25-23, 25-19, 21-25, 11-15). With the split, the Oilers now sit at 3-3 on the season.
Game One vs. St. Mary's | W 3-2
Findlay opened the day with a five-set victory over St. Mary's. The Oilers took the opening set 25-20 before the Rattlers responded with wins in the second and third sets, 25-18 and 25-21. Findlay battled back to take the fourth set 25-18 before closing out the match with a 15-9 victory in the fifth.
Junior Hannah Miller paced the Oilers offensively, recording a match-high 24 kills on 62 attacks while hitting .290. She also added three assists, two service aces, 18 digs and one block assist for a team-high 26.5 points. Kirsten Bomholt followed with 14 kills, while Lauren Foerster added 10 kills and four block assists.
Zoya Winkelfoos directed the Findlay offense with 36 assists and added six digs. Defensively, Miya Ellerbrock led the Oilers with 19 digs, while Miller added 18 and Bomholt contributed 15.
As a team, Findlay finished with 58 kills, 54 assists and 68 digs while hitting .206.
Game Two vs. Texas A&M-Kingsville | L 2-3
The Oilers closed the day against host Texas A&M-Kingsville in another tightly contested five-set battle. Findlay narrowly dropped the opening set 26-24 before responding with victories in the second and third sets, 25-23 and 25-19. The Javelinas answered with a 25-21 win in the fourth set before taking the deciding fifth set 15-11.
Miller once again led the way offensively, posting 26 kills on 64 attacks while hitting .203. The senior finished the match just three kills shy of her career high. She also added two assists, one service ace and 22 digs to finish with a team-high 27 points. Bomholt added 17 kills and 21 digs, while Foerster contributed 16 kills and four block assists.
Winkelfoos tallied 58 assists to guide the Oilers' offense, while also recording 19 digs. Bomholt also finished with 21 digs.
Findlay finished the match with 69 kills, 67 assists and 103 digs as a team.
The Oilers will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, September 5, for the final match of the Javelina Volleyball Classic. Findlay will take on Edinboro at 12 pm.
