Volleyball Opens Weekend Road Trip with Win at Ursuline

Pepper Pike, Ohio- The University of Findlay volleyball team opened a three game road trip with a stop at Ursuline College to face the Arrows in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) matchup on Friday, Sep. 18. The Oilers earned their 14th consecutive victory over Ursuline, sweeping the Arrows 3-0 for their ninth straight sweep in the series. With the win, Findlay improves to 5-5 on the season and 2-1 in conference play while Ursuline falls to 1-12 on the year and 0-4 in the league.

In the first frame, Ursuline took a quick 3-0 lead but the Oilers scored six straight thanks to back-to-back service aces from senior Hannah Miller to take the 6-3 lead. Findlay kept that three point lead at 16-13 before the Orange and Black went on a 9-1 run to take a dominant 25-14 win in set one.

After the opening set, the momentum stayed with Findlay which went on to win the final two sets with relative ease, leading by as much as 13 in the second and nine in the third.

Findlay hit .359 in the match, marking its best hitting percentage of the season, including a match-high .538 in the second set. The Oilers held Ursuline to a .000 hitting percentage overall, with the Arrows posting a -.038 mark in the second set.

Senior Hannah Miller and junior Stephanie Smith led the Oilers offensively, with each recording eight kills. Miller hit an impressive .400 while also contributing three aces, three digs, and three assists. Smith was also efficient at the net, hitting .368.

Fifth-year Lauren Foerster added seven kills while posting a .667 hitting percentage and recording two blocks. Sophomore Victoria Mescher also made an impact at the net, adding five kills on a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage along with two blocks.

Senior Zoya Winkelfoos and senior Kirsten Bomholt ran the offense as Winkelfoos led the team with 18 assists. Meanwhile Bomholt, who recently returned to the setting position, added six. 

Defensively, sophomore Ragan Greeneisen and senior Miya Ellerbrock led the way. Greeneisen led the team with 12 digs while Ellerbrock chipped in eight. 

The Oilers continue their road trip, Saturday, September 19, as they take on the Lake Erie Storm in a G-MAC contest in Painesville, Ohio. The match will begin at 1pm.
