Box Score The University of Findlay men's basketball team held on for a 71-66 win over Northern Michigan University on Thursday, January 14 in Marquette, Michigan. The victory gives the Oilers a 11-3 record on the season with a 7-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).
The Oilers looked to be in a comfortable situation, leading 65-56 with 2:45 remaining in the game but Northern Michigan wasn't going to go easily as they fought back to make the score 67-66 with 22 seconds remaining. Junior guard Nathan Hyde and sophomore forward Greg Avery then handled the rest, hitting two free throws apiece down the stretch to secure the win.
Junior forward Tyler Sparks led the way with 16 points, nine rebounds and four assists while Hyde chipped in 13 points on 3-of-9 shooting.
Avery added 11 points and four assists while junior center Jason Wehri had ten points and a career-high nine rebounds and three steals.
As a team, the Oilers shot 23-of-52 (44.2%) from the floor and drilled 11-of-26 (42.3%) shots from three point range.
Findlay also out-rebounded the Wildcats 33-28 and hit 14-of-17 (82.4%) shots from the charity stripe.
The Oilers will be back in action again on Saturday when they face Michigan Technological University at 2:00 p.m. in Houghton, Michigan.
