Quotes from the Coach
"The biggest thing is that we backed up our performance from last week against a strong field. Finishing the event in a playoff, especially after the way we ended the third round, gave us great experience going forward because you never know when those pressure situations may arise. We played so well all day in the windy conditions and I am very proud of this group. Now it is time to prepare for the William Beall Fall Classic at our home course."
Quote from Mary Kelly Mulcahy
"Going into each event, I just want to be fully confident and committed to what I'm doing. I am able to play freely and enjoy the moment if I know that I did everything I could to prepare leading into an event."
About the second team win of the year she said,
"The two team wins are huge. These two events to start the season are two of the best events in the country and we came in and have made a name for ourselves."
Trailing by three to start the day, the Oilers battled their way to the top of the leader board and spent most of Tuesday in that position. A one-shot lead quickly turned to four when senior
Gabby Woods made an eagle and birdie on her 16th and 17th holes of the day. However, that lead dissipated quickly in the final 20 minutes of the event, leaving the Oilers and host Dallas Baptist, which have become well-aquainted over the past few years, tied for first.
Both teams headed for the tenth tee where they would participate in a playoff to decide the tournament champion. All five players in the lineup would go out with the lowest score being dropped.
Playing in fivesomes, Dallas Baptist had three players in the first wave and Findlay sent out two, sophomore
Hayley Dye and freshman
Ashleigh Duflo. All three of the Patriots' players made bogey while Dye and Duflo both secured par.
The second wave included Woods, M. Mulcahy, and
Erin Mulcahy. Both players from DBU would make par to seal their score at two-over.
Erin Mulcahy, as she has done before, came up clutch, making birdie to put the Oilers three shots ahead. M. Mulcahy lagged her par putt in close, tapping in for bogey and sealing the win for the Oilers.
Mary Kelly Mulcahy, the reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Player of the Week, put together another incredible week on the course, finishing the event in a tie for second. She was one of just two players to shoot under-par in all three of her rounds, posting scores of 71, 70, and 69 during the event. Her 54-hole score of 210 (-6) ties a program record for three rounds. Through six tournament rounds this year, M. Mulcahy is averaging a 70.5 and has only gone over par once.
Woods was also key to the Oilers' comeback and also posted a 69 (-3) in her final round. The Sabina, Ohio native birdied her first three holes of the day, holes 5, 6, and 7, en route to a front-nine score of 31 that included four birdies and an eagle.
