Findlay Survives at Northwood | Win in Five

Box Score Midland, Mich.- The University of Findlay volleyball team returned to its winning ways, defeating the Northwood Timberwolves 3-2 (18-25, 25-19, 23-25, 25-23,15-12) on the road, Tuesday, Sep. 26. With the victory, the Oilers improve to 10-3 on the season and 4-2 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) play. Northwood falls to 9-5 on the year with a 4-2 record in the league.

In the first set, the Oilers got down by a score of 16-11 early on and, despite closing that gap to two points at 18-20,Northwood still went on to win the first. The Oilers did not do themselves any favors, hitting just .056 in the first.

The second set was back-and-forth, with neither team establishing a lead of more than three points. An 8-0 rally initiated by the visiting team shifted the momentum decisively in Findlay's favor. They closed out the set by capitalizing on two errors made by the Timberwolves.

In a closely contested third set, the score was tied eight different times. When the score reached a deadlock at 23, the home team managed to secure the final two points, believing they had seized the momentum as they headed into the fourth set. Nevertheless, the Oilers weren't ready to concede easily as they entered the fourth set.

Once again, the action was alternating as the lead changed five different times throughout the set. Similar to the third set, the match reached a deadlock late in the game, this time at 21 points apiece. However, the freshman duo of Kirsten Bomholt and Hannah Miller seized control, notching kills on three out of the four crucial points. Their efforts secured the set and compelled the match to extend to a fifth set.

In the fifth set, the Timberwolves got out to a head start, leading 5-1. A 10-2 run by the Oilers  would give Findlay the momentum and a four point lead. Needing just four more points to take the victory, the Oilers would turn to their front row who has been more than reliable all season. Kills by Bomholt and sophomore Alana Pohlman would be enough to settle the match.

As a team the Oilers hit .210, notching 53 kills while making 23 errors. Meanwhile, Northwood hit .153, recording 59 kills and making 36 errors.

Leading Findlay was freshman Kirsten Bomholt. The Versailles, Ohio native racked up 18 kills, two aces, and four blocks. Sophomore Lauren Foerster is starting to define herself up front for the Oilers as she recorded twelve kills on the night while hitting .286.

Junior Ava Doster returned to the libero position for UF tonight. She recorded a team-high 13 digs, two aces, and two assists. Leading Findlay in that category was Emma White who tallied 44 assists in the win.

Quote from Head Coach Wick Colchagoff
"It was a total team victory. Tonight we overcame adversity and played together as a team throughout the match.  After falling behind in the fifth set with Northwood making some great plays, we battled back and dominated at the end of the match."

The Oilers will return to Findlay as they host Trevecca Nazarene in Croy Physical Education Center on Friday, Sep. 29. The game is scheduled to begin at 6pm.
