Owensboro, Ky.- The University of Findlay women's golf team is currently in first place at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship, which wrapped up day one Thursday, April 25. The event is being held at the 5,913 yard, par 72, Pearl Club - which serves as Kentucky Wesleyan's home course. The Oilers recorded rounds of 296 (+8) and 297 (+9) and hold a 24-shot lead over Ashland.
Playing in the final conference tournament of her career, senior Gabby Woods, the defending G-MAC Champion, recorded the sole under-par score today with an opening round 71 (-1). She then closed the day with a 73 (+1). She is tied for first at even par with junior Mary Kelly Mulcahy. Mulcahy, whose vast resume doesn't include a conference championship, recorded back-to-back rounds of 72 (E).
Junior Erin Mulcahy is tied for third at five-over par. She recorded rounds of 74 (+2) and 75 (+3). Making her first conference championship appearance, freshman Ashleigh Duflo carded rounds of 79 (+7) and 77 (+5) to leave herself in a tie for tenth at 12-over par.
Rounding out Findlay's lineup is sophomore Hayley Dye. Dye is in a tie for 15th at 15-over par. She recorded rounds of 81 (+9) and 78 (+6).
Findlay will close out stroke play tomorrow morning and are in a solid position to make the medal match play portion of the event. This format, introduced in the G-MAC tournament two years ago, sends the top two teams from stroke play into a head-to-head battle on Saturday. Medal match play involves players from each team competing directly against each other, with each match earning a point and the first team to reach three points securing the tournament title.
The Oilers will continue the hunt for their sixth consecutive G-MAC title and seventh consecutive conference title. Findlay has also had an individual win the conference title for seven consecutive seasons.
