Canton, Ohio — The University of Findlay swimming and diving teams continued their charge toward another conference sweep on Wednesday, Feb. 11, extending their lead on both the men's and women's sides at the Great Midwest Athletic Conference/Mountain East Conference Championships at C.T. Branin Natatorium.
The Oilers delivered another night of top-end speed and overwhelming depth, collecting event wins, NCAA provisional standards and multiple podium sweeps. At the midpoint of the meet, Findlay's women hold a commanding 939 points, while the men lead with 977 points, positioning the program to continue its championship streak.
Men's Highlights
Findlay opened the night with a dominant showing in the 100-yard butterfly, where the Oilers swept the top five spots. Grad student Camilo Marrugo won the event in 46.24, earning an NCAA B standard. Senior Randy Keener followed in 47.03, also under the provisional cut, while David Schlor, Juan Blandon Torres and Stanislav Lohvynenko completed the sweep.
The Oilers kept rolling in the 400-yard individual medley, where senior Matteo Filippi won in 4:03.90, and sophomore Leland Woeste finished close behind at 4:04.83.
In the 200 freestyle, Findlay delivered another sweep of the top three spots. Freshman Sebastian Camacho won in 1:38.42, just ahead of junior Santiago Arteaga at 1:38.64 and freshman Nick Beratz at 1:39.18. All three athletes achieved NCAA B cuts.
Findlay capped the night in emphatic fashion with a win in the 400 medley relay. The team of Keener II, Arnaldo Guimarães, Marrugo and Blandon Torres posted a time of 3:12.83, securing the event title and finishing just shy of the NCAA provisional standard.
Women's Highlights
The women started their night with a commanding performance in the 100-yard butterfly. Senior Emily Mears-Bentley earned the win in 54.26, comfortably under the NCAA B mark. Sophomore Olivia Scheibelhoffer placed second in 54.91, also earning a B cut and the 11th-best mark in DII this year, while juniors Anabelle Smith and Alexis Jankowski, along with freshman Ava Shardo, filled out the top seven.
In the 400 individual medley, senior Katie Susi led Findlay with a third-place finish in 4:34.78, while freshmen Alex DeCarlo and Emma Montgomery placed fourth and fifth. Their efforts contributed to another strong team-scoring haul.
The Oilers surged again in the 200 freestyle, where senior Emily Mears-Bentley claimed her second win of the night in 1:51.20, achieving an NCAA B standard. Freshman Helmi Kakela finished second in 1:51.85, also meeting the provisional mark. Senior teammates Macee Reckard and Troie Grubbs added fifth- and sixth-place finishes, respectively, to deepen the scoring.
Findlay closed the evening with another relay victory, winning the 400 medley relay in 3:46.96 behind the team of Reckard, Susi, Scheibelhoffer and Grubbs. The relay posted the only sub-3:50 time in the field.
