Owensboro, Ky. – The University of Findlay women's tennis team, the top seed in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship Tournament, won its' semifinal match on Friday, April 25, taking down Northwood University, seeded fourth, by a score of 4-0. The victory sends the Oilers, ranked No. 12 in Division II, to Saturday's championship match. Findlay is set to take on the Tiffin University Dragons in the title match, the fourth consecutive year that the two teams will battle for the conference tournament crown.
That match will be played at 11 am EST.
Northwood, which played with just four players due to injury, advanced to the semifinal with a 4-3 win against Walsh University on Thursday. On Friday, the Timberwolves forfeited third doubles and a pair of singles match.
The Oilers got the scoring started in doubles when
Anamarija Kovacevic and
Elina Ivanova quickly won 6-2. With third singles being abandoned, the point belonged to UF.
Needing just one singles point to earn the match victory, the first player to finish would clinch the match for the Oilers. That player was G-MAC Freshman of the Year
Polina Zaytseva. In second singles, Polina won her first set 6-4 to take control.
In the second set, leading 5-3 but trailing 15-love, Zaytseva won four consecutive points to pick up the 6-4 set win and clinch the match for Findlay.
