Oilers Conclude Day Two of NCAA DII Outdoor Championships | Set for Final Day Saturday

Emporia, Kan.- The University of Findlay track and field teams competed on the second day of the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University. Day two of the three-day championship meet took place on Friday, May 22.

Freshman Charles Schmiesing got the Oilers started in the discus throw. In his NCAA Championship debut, Schmiesing recorded a mark of 50.71m on his final attempt to place 15th in a field of 22 competitors.

Findlay's jump squads were next in action as sophomore Owen Ackerman and senior Jessica Hoban opened competition in their respective events. Making his NCAA Championship debut in the high jump, Ackerman placed 17th after clearing 2.00m. Hoban followed in the triple jump, finishing 18th with a mark of 11.85m.

The Oilers then hit the track as junior standout Leah Smith competed in the 200m preliminaries. After narrowly missing the finals a season ago, Smith bounced back in a big way, placing second in her heat to punch her ticket to Saturday's final. Her time of 23.33 was a season best and the second-fastest mark in the prelims.

The day wrapped up with the women's 4x400 relay team advancing to the final after clocking a season-best 3:37.59. The quartet of sophomore Zanri Black, freshman Katharina Rupp, juniors Leah Smith and Mary Ellis secured a seventh-place qualifying position in the event.

Findlay will return to action on the final day of the championship on Saturday, May 23. The Oilers will be represented by senior Alex Mutchler in the pole vault, senior Eyan Wilson in the shot put, along with Leah Smith in the 200m, before the 4x400 relay team closes out competition.
