Emporia, Kan. – The University of Findlay track and field teams concluded their season on the final of three days at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday, May 23 at Welch Stadium on the campus of Emporia State University.
Sophomore Zanri Black, in the grueling 400m hurdles, posted a personal record to earn a spot on the podium. She crossed the line in a time of 59.25 while running in lane eight to earn a sixth-place finish in the race.
Also earning first team all-American on Saturday was junior standout Leah Smith who battled the best sprinters in the country in the 200m dash. Smith, who qualified into the finals with the second-fastest time in the prelims, would finish seventh in the race with a mark of 23.71 to earn a spot on the podium.
Rounding out Findlay's first team honorees on the day, Zanri Black, Katharina Rupp, Mary Ellis, and Leah Smith ran in the always thrilling 4x400m relay, the final event of the championship. The quartet finished in seventh with a time of 3:37.84 to take seventh place.
Competing in his final collegiate competition, senior Alex Mutchler took on the nation's best in men's pole vault. He cleared his first two heights easily before missing his first two attempts at 5.16m (16'11"). On his third attempt, Mutchler cleared the bar to lock in that mark which was good for a tie for tenth.
Participating in the shot put, junior Eyan Wilson narrowly missed out on making the finals as his third throw measured 17.41m (57'1.5") which was just over two feet shy of earning three more throws. His effort gave him a tenth-place finish in the event.
